In a way, it was a big relief to have him confirm that it is a benign tumor and that it is an acoustic neuroma. I was somewhat disappointed that I don't have a lot more information than what I already knew. He seemed genuinely surprised that I knew so much about acoustic neuromas. Really? Do a lot of people get diagnosed with a brain tumor and not research it???
Here is what I did find out. He recommends the Translabyrinthine approach. This involves an incision behind your ear. The mastoid and inner ear structures are removed to expose the tumor. The tumor is then removed. The mastoid defect is closed with fat taken from the abdomen. This approach sacrifices the hearing and balance mechanism in the inner ear.
I know what some of you are thinking? At least you are getting a tummy tuck with this. NOPE, I wish. The fat graft from your stomach is nothing like a tummy tuck. I have heard it actually leaves your stomach looking somewhat deformed. Not that my children didn't already do that.
This approach gives the surgeon the clearest view of the facial nerve. There is a 50/50 chance that I will have some type of temporary facial nerve damage. As long as the facial nerve is not severed, most people will recover over time and no signs of facial nerve damage will remain. This is my biggest concern. I am hoping and praying that my facial nerve will not be damaged during the surgery especially since saving my hearing is not an option. I actually have all of my hearing back at this point. I am enjoying it while it lasts!
There are small risks of meningitis, cerebrial spinal fluid leak, or needing a blood transfusion. The doctor actually recommended I donate a unit of my own blood before the surgery in case they need to do a transfusion.
Dr. Shelton is so busy that his surgeries are booked through January. I do not have a definitive date for my surgery (I will on Monday when his office assistant calls).
I want to say thank you for all the love and support that my family and I have received at this time. From prayers to meals to texts or calls, I have been overwhelmed. Thank you for all the love and support. We are so grateful to have such wonderful family and friends.<strike><strike><strike></strike></strike></strike>Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05978268640471460533noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3097945326867739274.post-9174861837847125272012-10-04T15:18:00.001-07:002012-10-04T15:18:55.002-07:00PerspectiveIn the middle of August, I suffered sudden hearing loss. I went to the instacare and they told me I had fluid in my inner ear and that if I took sudafed it would clear right up. I took sudafed, (it helped a little) and then they hearing loss came right back. I went to see and ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat specialist), they did lots of hearing tests and told me that I had nerve damage (most likely from a virus)and that my hearing was most likely gone. The ENT scheduled an MRI. He said that it is highly uncommon, but sometimes there is a growth on the brain that causes hearing loss...but it's uncommon.
We were on our way to Disneyland when the ENT called and asked if I could come in for a follow-up appointment with my doctor. I told her that we were on vacation and I asked if they could tell me over the phone. She told me that I needed to come in and sounded concerned. I tried to forget about it while we were in Disneyland, but our phone conversation lingered in my mind. When we got home from Disneyland, I decided to look at the MRI images I had been given. It was very evident in these images that I had a tumor on my brain. I started freaking out. I started researching brain cancer statistics. They are not good. Especially if the tumor is malignant. My cousins wife works at Huntsman so I called her. She calmed me down quite a bit and suggested that I ask for a copy of the radiology report (if I couldn't get into see a doctor right away). I had an appointment scheduled for Wednesday, so I drove to the hospital to get a copy of the report. I was a mess the entire way. What would it say? What if it was malignant? We have three small children. I should let you know that I am the queen of wishing life away (I know I shouldn't), but sometimes I wish the twins were in preschool and that I could pee by myself every once in a while. Nothing will make you more grateful for the life you currently have than realizing that it might be taken away from you. When I got the copy of the radiology report I quickly read through what I could and what I couldn't understand. This is what I know so far. I have a large accoustic neuroma.
Acoustic neuroma: A benign tumor that may develop on the hearing and balance nerves near the inner ear. The tumor results from an overproduction of Schwann cells -- small sheet-like cells that normally wrap around nerve fibers like onion skin and help support the nerves. When growth is abnormally excessive, Schwann cells bunch together, pressing against the hearing and balance nerves, often causing gradual hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and dizziness. If the tumor becomes large, it can interfere with the facial nerve, causing partial paralysis, and eventually press against nearby brain structures, becoming life-threatening.
I have been referred to Dr. Shelton. He specializes in this type of tumor. He is apparently the only person in the state who performs these and is therefore, really busy. I most likely won't get into see him for 3 to 4 weeks and then I am hoping to have the tumor removed before the end of the year. I will have to shave a portion of my head :( I will have to have surgery on/near my brain :( I could suffer facial nerve damage and one side of my face might droop :( These are not fun to think about, but I am so unbelievably grateful that these types of tumors are benign. I am so grateful to have a doctor in Utah who specializes in these.

A few people have made comments about Zacc and I having to go through a lot with his thyroid cancer and then this. I appreciate the concern of these people and their wanting good things for us, but I want to be very clear that Zacc and I do not feel that life is unfair. We have been so incredibly blessed by a loving Heavenly Father who is constantly taking care of us. There are so many others who have been through far more difficult trials. Thank you for all of the love and support we have received. We have amazing friends and family :)Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05978268640471460533noreply@blogger.com18tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3097945326867739274.post-17142356255240227252011-02-26T19:54:00.000-08:002011-02-26T19:59:51.749-08:00Max and Kate???My cute friend, Dani Davies, works for a scrap booking company, Memories and More. They were doing a photo shoot for a new product they were launching and Dani asked if Hayden and Caitlyn would model onesies for their shoot. I agreed. "Hayden" and "Caitlyn" had too many letters to fit on the hat, so for the shoot they were Max and Kate. I think the pictures turned out darling. Here are the twins at 4 months :)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 155px; height: 166px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLXkM4FCw3jnmTEhGuDBmxKQ-M37FqZuxOJlx27cwGRV7MQ7VVK6Sdz_0I8dECEQvo_2qUOl57PeiSvwVUGKokAKupP-KpSg51bXzU9P-kWwZu2McUiAC7IhjBctweXx44eHUSrX7lUM0/s320/hc1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578213402601741314" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 177px; height: 166px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBgsCWYuYRzbfagPfmh7A6XSsN5SE62Tm_qtCx7xGMrihmCq0kY7l1BVQ6GIrR4JF_8rzFgMM2sfBAP4U9lAPZnxIBUOa1Q0tCFpMtwzSu8lD-iWJ_kFRy96NsgmK2tHUfURbtHP6iWjY/s320/hc.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578213401190917714" />Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05978268640471460533noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3097945326867739274.post-28547581891956389162011-02-07T21:41:00.000-08:002011-02-07T21:54:18.756-08:00Blessing DayWe blessed Hayden and Caitlyn last month and to my surprise, everything went pretty smoothly. Thank goodness for one o'clock church (I am not a fan every other week, but we would have never made it to an early meeting). Here are some pictures from the big day!

Here is the whole family

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 278px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicOqXMwwvqWQwPY6t7GLaxdEI7TE-iTnL7FZTY9xamjWtPH57zQyyfh0SqWNHMcCJ4jZ51qzWUQdVrwpQ1Ly_6E9U48SciAmdUX3pWPw7_7QFnWC99OCFrZh3Naq9UInb0x8-iEk203ms/s320/BD+Family.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571190377549445522" />

Hayden has a HUGE head! He still has a really hard time holding it up and that is probably why he is looking up in this picture. Even though his head might be slightly disproportionate to his body, I think he has the cutest little face ever :)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 179px; height: 283px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibvNXOET7RQ0LBktqa36pnvt2yzFcBa7oIPeIGG_ZZMjQn6sYjAGjrBBPkzn71W0014XO-oZ5W-RV7Fgi8SG7CZnzWTr645h9KJOy7mqslIpfVUC8hitNSQjdUR97ewbs6Njcr0184q8E/s320/BD+Hayden.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571192694668328850" />

Caitlyn is the happiest baby I have ever seen. She said "Mom, you're a little bit of a circus." Yes Macey, I am. Here is a little bit of background as to why we are such a circus.

In October we had the twins. One week after having the twins, Zacc called me to inform me had had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. He wasn't having any problems or pain, but because thyroid cancer runs in his family and I am paranoid, I made him go and get checked. His first appointment showed that he had nodules on his thyroid. The doctor told him not to worry and that 50% of people have nodules on their thyroids. After having the nodules biopsied, we learned they were cancerous. Zacc had his thyroid removed in November and is currently on an iodine free diet in preparation for this radiation treatment on Friday. Apparently, thyroid cancer has a really high cure rate, which is wonderful news...learning that your husband has cancer when your twins are one week old is not such wonderful news.

The week after we found out that Zacc has cancer (the twins were two weeks old), Zacc presented his final project and graduated from Westminster and we rented out our townhouse and moved in with my parents while we continue to look for a house.

The twins are now 3 months old and Hayden is doing a lot better. Having him on two reflux medicines has made a world of difference. He doesn't scream every second he is awake. He is actually a pretty happy baby and smiles a ton. Caitlyn has always been super happy and is almost rolling over. I can't believe how fast the time has gone since they have been born (my pregnancy sure didn't go by quickly). Macey always tells me that she doesn't want the babies to be little. As much as I want them to be bigger so they will sleep through the night, I also want them to stay little...after all, these might be the last babies we have. Zacc and I are not sure how the radiation will effect his reproductive organs but feel very blessed to have three beautiful healthy kids. We really are so blessed :)

Things are crazy and I keep telling myself that someday things will all be better and we will look back at this crazy time in our lives and laugh. But for right now, Macey you are right...I am a little bit of a circus!Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05978268640471460533noreply@blogger.com20tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3097945326867739274.post-230884246696516682011-01-02T21:52:00.000-08:002011-01-02T21:56:18.239-08:00HypocriteI have never been a fan of private blogs. I have to log in to view them, I can't tell if they were recently updated, and it makes blog stalking a lot harder...jk...(well, kind of kidding). But after some random comments on my blog and some persuasion from Zacc, I am going to make our blog private. If you would like to read it (I promise I will post more often), please leave me your email in a comment. Well, in case you don't remember, I won a free photography session from the amazing Tracy Layne and used it for Hayden and Caitlyn's newborn pics. Here are just a few, but I thought they turned out mighty cute if you ask me. She did okay. She would skate around the rink with Zacc once (he obviously held both her hands and apparently carried most of her weight), then Zacc would hold her and skate around the rink with her in his arms, then she was done and would want to come watch with me. After watching Zacc skate around the rink a few times, she would say to me "I can skate," and we would start the whole process over again.Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05978268640471460533noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3097945326867739274.post-86554613505757305652010-08-16T18:58:00.001-07:002010-08-16T19:00:28.283-07:00Tracy Layne PhotographyNot only is Tracy one of my favorite people in the whole world, she's an amazing friend, a wonderful mother and wife and happens to be an extraordinary photographer...I am seriously hoping I win the giveaway!!!

Here is the info...

Hey everyone! Just what every girl wants at 26 weeks. I thought it was bad to be one week overdue with Macey. I thought my doctor would go off the size of the twins for the due date (seeing as how that's what he did with Macey), but he is sticking with the original due date...bummer. Here is how our conversation went after that.

Me: Should I be concerned that the twins are measuring big seeing as how Macey was 9lbs. 6 oz?

OB: Nope, you shouldn't be concerned about anything. In fact, I delivered twins last week that were both over 8 lbs.

Me: (Thinking to myself)...maybe it wasn't clear that my concern is that I am going to have carry two huge babies...not whether or not you can deliver them...

Don't get me wrong, I want nothing more than to carry these babies long enough so that they are fully developed, but the thought of having 16 lbs. of baby inside me is a little overwhelming!Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05978268640471460533noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3097945326867739274.post-40585180074084608522010-06-15T20:32:00.000-07:002010-06-15T20:36:15.577-07:00Help please...We recently moved Macey into a big girl bed and she loved it. I loved it too. I could lay down by her instead of having to rock her to sleep. Things were going great until Macey realized she could get out of her big girl bed. I am not opposed to having her come and sleep with me when she wakes up too early, or even going to sleep in her bed with her, but she won't do either. I have tried positive reinforcement, but that is definitely not working. I am not sure how I feel about putting a lock on her door. I know a lot of parents do it, but I just don't know how I feel about it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. We are having a boy and a girl!!! Everything looked great during the ultrasound and we couldn't be more excited.Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05978268640471460533noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3097945326867739274.post-45056639691113864542010-06-07T18:05:00.001-07:002010-06-07T18:06:04.087-07:00Any GuessesWe are finding out what the twins are on Thursday and I thought I would take a little vote before the ultrasound. I posted a poll on the side of our blog. Feel free to vote, we would love to know what you think!Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05978268640471460533noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3097945326867739274.post-4450192676350173092010-05-22T09:23:00.001-07:002010-05-22T09:27:19.429-07:00Some Days...Well, let's be honest, most days I am pretty sure this little girl is the cutest thing ever! Being pregnant makes me wonder how it's even possible to love your second (and third) child as much, but I am sure I will love these new babies every bit as much. But for right now, I am just enjoying being Macey's mom :)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 232px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJmR7TAfNjqDXJ1gLmeCiIABcBygcejppFkaEBlRQNpl_Am31nLx_K2nmjtd7Zrot3_ZBUwrpY5PEeMuj01uRpouupHULhmZCnqljwJa83JCQjy59UBgsOPsomeByt7Z4Q_ZJCef28ZCM/s320/Macey1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5474131466644093410" />Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05978268640471460533noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3097945326867739274.post-54041945936604370132010-05-18T18:51:00.001-07:002010-05-18T18:56:40.403-07:00Photography Mentoring SessionI was lucky enough to attend a photography mentoring session from Jen Herem. She does modern children's photography and I absolutely LOVE her work. I learned so much and was even able to shoot a couple pictures of darling little Roma with her. A big thanks to Jen for all the help and thanks to Whitney for providing the darling model :) Roma was such a good sport, especially since there were four of us shooting pictures of her and calling her name all at the same time. Her are a few...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 220px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCh9MUHfmJ1-LvAEWwFpkjn5ESIJLjwNRAXU0ohEuqV4vTZ8RQXCLKjIQup0twGVDWnBkpcJ6vKpk1vsSChjmocs6NxzaxpwvHZ4pRAIL_iMGUfg644TsrmyP_GO7Qi-TQvRqxvQQodME/s320/Roma3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472793769847758882" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 227px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoSNzOEB-tcpuFMpVXENWiHkyYGKmF7D4w8D-G7QVjR8vw5iXWR-VHZWQ5mE085_93w2RotOOBUFM08YgXy4Cyqq7IHe_lNTZDwwphyphenhyphenVYf7_NysgZmD5mSJJOnA04JwUdVD3VvDRcixWA/s320/Roma2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472793762760089170" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 209px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQtLY3CoNuE7tZabjFU0fx8r2RzLPi0Cpw6Jc8Ep4ss38N5FPeWIHUOks7uhTKaFZWUEOSi5Kf1SedgpYwC_7c5DCRJPHC64MARaJtgtJhPSI33CRB_wmVKhixiuJu091P9SMDbWOc-Aw/s320/Roma1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472793755890001266" />Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05978268640471460533noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3097945326867739274.post-56339481571428321152010-05-01T20:26:00.000-07:002010-05-01T20:30:19.092-07:00Recent Happenings...Clearly I am not much of a blogger...too be honest, I am not sure what I am much of these days other than a consumer of food. I would like to promise that I will be better at updating the blog, but that is highly unlikely. Here are some pictures of what we have been up to lately.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy7nD_0GxMZYSeS8B6pKW6TuOUzyoCldc0lC8EvTrNaIv-Mj7bPq3BGf2eFmTC8KbZy6IzlGCqaQflscN2iH153sKQ2tooeO_m_2Bb8Z5Goiu3hgkrQxvbXOzcIsjeIIoUNbJFoy29BXQ/s320/Collage+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5466509651819970850" />Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05978268640471460533noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3097945326867739274.post-26580072250237971012010-04-07T18:22:00.000-07:002010-04-07T18:59:57.919-07:00TaggedI am seriously hoping that I feel well enough to make it to Spring Fling this year, so in case I do, I want my treat!

Calling all Bosley women

Anyone that knows my family know that in the Spring we go on a vacation with just the women. That includes my mom, my sisters, my mom sister's and their kids and my grandma's sisters and their kids. We call this exodus Spring Fling. In honor of Spring Fling I am starting a tag. Anyone who gets tagged and answers will get a special treat.

3 favorite spring fling memories/stories

1. Endless stories about Bob Sacamano...does anyone actually know Bob Sacamano?
2. Learning that not all girls look the same...down there...
3. Hearing about when my grandma and her sisters were teenagers and tried to smoke the used cigarette butts and how they deflated the car tires and drove across the train tracks on the bridge.

3 things I am most looking forward to

1. Nachos at 1:00 a.m...and then again at 1:30...and 1:45.
2. Toe Touches at 2:00 a.m...after 3 rounds of nachos.
3. Seeing all of the people that I don't get to see nearly often enough.
4. I also took the liberty of adding a 4th. I am seriously looking forward to a spring fling when I am not pregnant or don't have a baby with me...Looks like 2012 might be my year :)

3 things that will definitely be in my suitcase

1. ALL maternity clothes...because as sad as it is only being 11 weeks along, I look like I could deliver these babies next month :(
2. Zofran, Tums, Unisom, and Colace..fun, fun for me!
3. A extra blanket-I have been burned before and I am not sleeping under a towel this year.

Lisa pretty much tagged everyone, but I am also excited to hear the answers :)Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05978268640471460533noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3097945326867739274.post-66842866323556298752010-03-15T20:18:00.000-07:002010-03-15T20:26:30.942-07:00The ERLast weekend was not fun. I was SO sick...I literally thought I was going to die. I couldn't keep anything down and after passing out twice from dehydration, Zacc ended up taking me to the ER at about 2 in the morning. The doctor asked me if I was pregnant and I told her "No." I had taken 3 pregnancy tests that all turned out negative. After a urine sample, the doctor came back and told me that I was pregnant, but because I was so sick she was afraid it might be a tubal pregnancy and that they would need to perform surgery. Zacc and I waited for what seemed like an eternity for the ultra sound. The girl finally showed up and started asking me questions.

"How many times have you been pregnant?"

"once."

"How many live births?"

"one."

"Have you ever taken fertility drugs?"

"No, we got pregnant the first try with Macey and apparently the first try this time too."

"Oh, really. That's funny because you are having twins!"

"...."

We are still in shock...Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05978268640471460533noreply@blogger.com35
